Latest Attempt at Decorating

Gotta love Goodwill. After I saw an easy-looking (emphasis on "looking") craft on some blogs, so I immediately headed over and bought four frames for four dollars, plus some awesome Indie-looking art (trust me, it's weird. Can't wait to find a place for it!) for another dollar.

The craft is printing silhouettes onto book pages. Google Images for the win! It looks really awesome when you get it right, but let me tell you, it's not so much fun when your printer is spawn of Satan. It was impossible to get the small pages (which I tore out of a book that I got on sale and hated) to go in straight, and I can't even begin to guess how much ink I wasted in my dozen attempts. They didn't turn out perfectly, but I'm too cheap to buy another ink cartridge, so it'll have to do.

I then spent literally ALL of yesterday experimenting with paint for the frames. There was this cool tutorial (and I just spent the last ten minutes trying to remember the word "tutorial") for how to make your paint look cracked and old, and I thought I'd try it out. It's really very easy--just paint a base color, then when it's dry, cover it with regular cheap glue. When the glue starts to turn translucent, add another layer of paint (preferably a different color so the cracks show up). I probably should've stuck to one main color, but I was having fun with all the paints I got for our chairs (see THIS to know what I'm talking about), so it got to be a bit more than I bargained for. I might change the yellow one to white, but we'll see how I feel about it in a few days.

This one was a bit accidental--I hated how it turned out, and was too impatient for the paint to completely dry before I started sanding. In the end, I thought it looked kinda cool this way, so I kept it. And, yes, it's a fox, of course. Would you expect anything else from me? Two of the others are from Alice in Wonderland (whimsy is my new favorite), and the last is a weird witch pulling a cage. No idea what that's about, but I thought it looked cool.

Anyway, that's what I've been doing the last two days. It fills the large blank wall in our living room quite nicely.

Any other decorating ideas? I need a new hobby to distract me from the two papers due tomorrow.

  3. Julia! I love this. It's so cute! Another similar idea is so wrap cardboard in cute wrapping paper and put it in frames. Then you have a pretty, framed corkboard.
