Writing Attempt #328

For the first time in a long time, I'm writing again. Book writing, that is. Obviously I write for my blog quite often and wrote a rather large amount of papers recently. Anyway, I get very frustrated with my book writing very quickly because I often have too many conflicting ideas, or because I'm not sure where to take a story next, or because I write myself into a corner and it's rather annoying having to delete ten pages of mediocre writing. I have 5-10 story ideas written down in various places that I've left for later when I could get past these barriers, and I'm going back to one of my original ideas that I loved when I first wrote, but quickly got stuck on.

I was hoping you guys could help me: what are your favorite books, and why? What aspects of them made it impossible for you to put down? Any advice in general? Because I could use all the help I can get if I'm ever going to finish this thing, let alone get it published.

  1. I still love the Count of Monte Cristo. Just the way the plot moves along and the intricacy of his plan for revenge is amazing. I also love anything that has a good mystery but can manage to be funny. Too many books take themselves to seriously (okay, not the books themselves, but you know what I mean).

  2. The Honor Harrington series. Most people in the books are well-characterized and there are usually several interesting plot developments unfolding at once. It also has some interesting historical parallels. Oh, and huge space battles. Gotta have the huge space battles.

  4. For me the way and timing that information is divulged is extremely important. That's why I love Poe. He has an interesting way of narrating in an omniscient fashion with intricate details, but ultimately his stories are emotional journeys and he holds onto several critical facts until the end. Sometimes you know it's coming, but the horrible anticipation leaves you shocked none-the-less.
